20 September 2014 is a Saturday. A day for general elections throughout New Zealand.
As holders of Residency Visas, we are required by law to register as voters, although the actual act of casting a ballot is naturally one of choice.
Unlike the effort involved in registering as a voter in South Africa, registration in New Zealand is pretty simple. A few questions, like your name, your date of birth and your residential address, and sign and date the form. Then pop it into the special envelope and post it back.
Ours took less than five minutes to complete and moments later they were in our post box outside, with the red flag “up” for the postman to collect in the morning. Done.
The act of electing people who are held accountable for their actions, and will step down from office for any “wrongdoing” is somewhat new and refreshing to us. We look forward to the experience.
